The Story

There are moments in travel that stay with you. Moments that shift perspective. Moments that turn connection into responsibility.

There are moments in travel that stay with you. Moments that shift perspective. Moments that turn connection into responsibility.

Her name is Sister Martha.

And what she has built is nothing short of extraordinary.

Why This Matters

Tanzania has one of the highest rates of albinism in the world, with approximately 1 in every 1,400 people born with the condition, compared to around 1 in 20,000 globally.

Albinism affects skin pigmentation, vision, and sensitivity to sunlight. Without proper care, individuals face increased risk of skin damage, visual impairment, and skin cancer.

But the challenges go beyond health:

In many communities, albinism is still misunderstood. Children often face stigma, exclusion, and barriers to education. Many lack access to basic protection, resources, and safe environments.

And yet—with the right support—everything changes.

Education becomes possible.
Health improves.
Confidence grows.
Futures open.

Sister Martha

In a small community in Arusha, Sister Martha turned her own experience of rejection into a mission of care and protection.

Born with albinism, she faced isolation, discrimination, and deep hardship from a young age.

But instead of turning away, she chose to build something different.

What began with helping one child has grown into a lifelong commitment.

Today, she has supported more than 178 children with albinism across Tanzania. Many have gone on to secondary school, college, and beyond.

She currently cares for around 45–50 children living in overcrowded and under-resourced conditions.

Her home is a place of safety, dignity, and belonging—but it is no longer enough.

The Need Today

The children in Sister Martha’s care face:

  • Overcrowded living conditions
  • Limited access to food and basic needs
  • Ongoing medical challenges, including skin and eye care
  • A lack of stable infrastructure to support their future

This is not about creating something new.

It is about strengthening something that already works.

Real Impact - Lives Already Changing

Regina grew up in a Maasai community where living with albinism meant daily risk, exclusion, and uncertainty.

Everything changed when she arrived at Sister Martha’s home.

For the first time, she found safety, belonging, and people who understood her.

Today, Regina is studying social work, with the goal of advocating for others and creating change within her community.

Regina is one of many lives already transformed through this work.

Our role is to bring this story forward and connect our global community to something that is already working—and ready to grow.

In Partnership With

Transparency

We believe in being open about how funds are managed.

Tourism Cares retains a 7% administrative fee to support secure processing, compliance, and oversight as a registered 501(c)(3).

Seeds of Tomorrow Initiative retains up to 4% to cover local oversight, banking, and administrative costs in Tanzania.

Together, this represents a total potential overhead of up to 11%, which is well below commonly accepted nonprofit guidelines where up to 35% is considered within an optimal range.

Nanda Journeys does not retain any funds. All proceeds go directly toward supporting Sister Martha’s project and the children in her care.

All remaining funds are directed toward the stated project goals.
